Lehár Festival Bad Ischl

Lehár Festival Bad Ischl

A feast for the eyes, ears and mouth.

In the charming city of the Kaiser, Bad Ischl, where Franz Lehár composed his incomparable works, one can still sense the merriment of operetta in the air. Rich in tradition, the Operetta Festival has been producing operetta of the highest quality for more than forty years.

Here in Bad Ischl, operetta is as lively as never before. A young team, now in their third successful season, has brought the genre into the 21st century. On offer is music theater of the highest order, with nostalgic opulence, a loving pride for the genre and a tasteful shot of ironic wit for good measure, that will even satisfy our younger fans. Alongside tradition, that especially here in Bad Ischl one can almost bathe in, artistic innovation never receives short shrift: here we have a mixture of Austrian charm and a sardonic wink of the eye. In addition to the well-known hits of the genre, the Lehár festival seeks to spotlight the lesser-known works that threaten to slip into obscurity.

OPERETTA –A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

Ever since Kaiser Franz Josef chose this city in the heart of the Salzkammergut for his favorite summer vacation spot, followed by great composers and musicians of the day, Bad Ischl has been the ideal place for an “imperial” summer vacation. So, out of gratitude, the city of Bad Ischl still celebrates the birthday of the “good, old Kaiser” with an opulent gala concert. The concert takes place on August 16th with Festival soloists singing the beautiful strains of the long ago, as well as recounting amusing anecdotes of the day.

The tradition-filled festival has more to offer than first class musical entertainment; it whets the appetite each year for summer breezes…here in a place of tranquility, one can satisfy all of the senses, enjoying the imperial ambience, taking a lazy stroll through the Kurpark or just sitting and gazing at the magnificent mountains. Culinary delights await on the terrace of the imposing Congress and Theater, site of the Lehár festival performances. And sitting in the garden of the renowned Imperial Konditorei Zauner next to the flowing river is an absolute Must! The magic of the past can still cast a powerful spell. There is lots to do in this charming city, from amusing evenings of operetta, to a full palette of cultural events: trips to the museum the Kaiser Villa, Trinkhalle, Lehár’s summer villa, or the Wellness Center of the Kaiser thermal baths. No wonder Franz Lehár chose this city to be his home!
